What started as a small idea — redesigning the classic Old Maid card game — turned into a joyful creative project I got to share with my kid, and now with the world.
🎨 The Problem:
I’ve always loved the mechanics of Old Maid, but let’s be honest… the message behind it hasn’t aged well. Why should the “loser” be an older woman? Why is being unmatched a bad thing? I didn’t want to teach my kid that.
So I reimagined the game into something new, something inclusive, and something fun:
Sneaky Sock — a matching card game full of playful sock characters, and one odd sock who isn’t a punishment… just a little mischievous.
🔍 Research & Design Phase:
I researched card games from around the world, explored inclusive design principles, and made a list of values I wanted the game to reflect:
- Celebrate difference
- Remove shame from the game
- Encourage storytelling and laughter
Then I started sketching characters: Shark Sock, Pizza Sock, Space Sock, Ghost Sock… and of course, the star of the show — Sneaky Sock.
🛠️ Printing the Game:
I designed all the cards using AI and Photoshop, then laid them out using a print-ready template.
To print, I used the FedEx/Kinkos online print center:
- 100lb matte finish cardstock
- Double-sided printing
- Laminated each page for durability
I picked them up the next day — smooth, easy, and the final result looks amazing.
🌀 Tracking the Ripples:
I didn’t want this to be just another download-and-forget game. I wanted to track the stories that come out of playing it. So I built a tracker form right into the website.
You can log who played, what made you laugh, and even submit your own sock ideas!
